The Spirit breathes upon the Word
作詞者ウィリアム・クーパー（William Cowper1731-1800)は英国の詩人で、父はジョージ二世のチャプレンでした。弁護士を志しましたが法曹界には身を投じませんでした。英国南部のバッキンガムシャー州に住み、アメイジング・グレイス（Amazing Grace）の作者で彼の友人でもあるジョン・ニュートン(John Newton)と共にオーニー讃美歌集(Olney Hymns)を著しました。オーニー讃美歌集はもともと比較的貧しく、学歴に恵まれない信徒の多い地方教区で使用されるためのものでしたが、大変有名になり記録によれば1836年までに37版を重ね、その後も英国およびアメリカで版を重ねました。（参照文献：The Cyber Hymnalおよびフリー百科事典Wikipedia英語版）

まことと教(おし)えの　光(ひかり)はなつ。

栄光輝(えいこうかがや)く　聖(せい)なる者(もの)は、
すべての時代(じだい)を　照(て)らす光(ひかり)。

暗(くら)き世(よ)を照(て)らす　み神(かみ)の知恵(ちえ)に

喜(よろこ)びいさみて　み足(あし)のあとを
さかえの朝(あさ)まで　たどりつづけん。
