作詞者モンセル（Ｊｏｈｎ S. B. Ｍｏｎｓｅｌｌ）はアイルランドのロンドンデリーの副主教の息子として生まれ、ダブリンのトリニティカレッジに学びました。英国南部のサリーで教区牧師をつとめた後、ギルドフォードの聖ニコラス教会牧師となりましたが教会堂再築の折、誤って屋根から転落し、天に召されました。かれは生涯約３００もの讃美歌を作詞しましたがこの讃美歌は彼の有名なもののひとつで結婚式の際よく歌われるおなじみのものです。（参考資料： The Cyber Hymnal)

いのちとひかり　たもう神(かみ)よ、
そのみ恵(めぐ)みは　かぎりもなし。
すべてのものを　守(まも)り照(て)らし
聖(きよ)き愛(あい)もて　満(み)たしたまえ。

むすぶ手(て)と手(て)を　主(しゅ)よ、祝(しゅく)して
ふたりの心(こころ)　ひとつとなし、
