Thou art the Way
作詞者George Washington Doane(1799-1859)はユニオン・カレッジ(Union College)を卒業後、ニューヨークのトリニティ・チャーチの副牧師に就任。その後、コネティカット州ハートフォードのトリニティ・カレッジで修辞学および文学の教授を務めたあと、マサチューセッツ州ボストンのトリニティ・チャーチで教区牧師、ニュージャージーの監督教会の主教等を歴任。バーリントン・カレッジやセントメアリー・ホール・ドーンアカデミーの設立にも貢献しました。彼が弱冠25歳のときに"Songs by the Way, 1824"を世に問い、詩人・讃美歌作者としてのたぐまれな才能を証明することになりました。（出典：The Cyber Hymnal　およびChristian Classics Ethereal Library）
