| 作詞者ニコラウス・ルードヴィッヒ・フォン・ツィンツェンドルフ(Nikolaus Ludwig von Zinzendorf 1700-1760）は貴族(伯爵)で富に恵まれた家庭に生まれ、ヴィッテンブルク大学でしばらくの間、法律を学びましたが、やがて学問に飽き、19歳でヨーロッパ放浪の旅に出ました。3年後、ザクセンのベルテルスドルフの地所を相続しましたが、ここにモラヴィア兄弟団(Moravian Brethren)と名乗る宗教難民の一団が住むことを許しました。1732年には「主の避けどころ」と呼ばれるこのモラヴィア居留地は600名以上に膨れ上がり、ツインツェンドルフに率いられたモラヴィア教会の発祥の地となりました。 モラヴィアは1732年宣教師の派遣を開始、最初の2名を西インド諸島に、1735年には一団をジョージアへ、その後ペンシルバニアへ派遣しました。ペンシルバニアには1741年のクリスマスに到着し、先遣隊と合流、クリスマスに到着したのでその落ち着き場所をベツレヘムと命名しました。有名なベツレヘム・スティールがその名を得たのはこの地名からです。ツインツェンドルフは生涯でおよそ2000もの讃美歌を著し、モラヴィア兄弟団はこれらの多くを宣教のドイツ語以外の他の言葉にも翻訳しました。（The Cyber Hymnalより） | |
