Cast thy bread upon the waters
証しと奉仕に関する讃美歌で「むくいを望まで」と文語体のタイトルですが、口語では「むくいを望まずに」という意味です。歌詞はニューイングランドのユニバーサリスト教会(万人救済派)において女性としてはじめて牧師に任命されたPhebe Ann Coffin Hanaford(1829-1921)です。クエーカー教徒の船主の娘として生を受け、文才に恵まれ十代で地方紙に記事を掲載。　ラテン語、数学を学び数年は教鞭を取りました。詩作、子ども向け物語、エッセイ、伝記を手掛け、就中、アブラハム・リンカーンの伝記は二万部の売上を記録しました。ユニバーサリスト教会誌の編集も担当し、ついには牧師に任命されたのでした。（The Cyber Hymnalより）

むくいを望(のぞ)まで　人(ひと)に与(あた)えよ、
こは主(しゅ)のとうとき　みむねならずや、
水(みず)の上(うえ)に落(お)ちて　流(なが)れしたねも、
